Lewis County 4-H at the Fair

For a week in July each year, 4-H youth in Lewis County have an opportunity to share and showcase the projects they've been working on at the Lewis County Fair. The public is invited to come and see what youth in this program are doing. Non-animal events will be held in the LeRoy Nichols Youth Building by the main gate at the Bostwick Street entrance. There will be many youth animal shows from dairy cows and horses to rabbits and sheep.

4-H Youth Building

Projects: Exhibits in the 4-H Youth Building include Communicative & Expressive Arts, Home Environment, Arts & Crafts, Child Development, Clothing & Textiles, Food & Nutrition, Visual Arts, Plant Collections and Garden entries.

Action exhibits and activities:4-H youth and other children can participate in games, the human bubble and much more entertainment in the 4-H Youth Building.

4-H Action Activities & Exhibits: Stop in and check out 4-H projects to see what Lewis County 4-H'ers have learned. Youth can participate in many activities including the Smoothie Bike, Human Bubble Machine and Dance Mat in the LeRoy Nichols Youth Building.

PLAN AHEAD...2018 4-H Fair Youth Building Contests

Why not think about participating in the youth building fair competitions?

Each year there will be 5 contests - 3 that stay the same:

  • clothing and textile show
  • poster contest
  • photography contest

and 2 that change:

  • Healthy Living
  • STEM

Prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in all competitions. All participants will receive a ribbon. Prizes donated by local businesses. 

4-H Table Setting Contest: The Table Setting Contest will be held at the 2018 Lewis County Fair for all 4-H members. Participants will create their own table setting and menu that corresponds with a theme they create.  Participating in a table setting contest is a fun way to…Show creativity and originality with choosing a theme, gain and show knowledge of nutrition, food, and food safety, learn how to properly set a table and interact with others. 

4-H Table Setting Contest Procedures and Guidelines

Clothing & Textile Show – held on Thursday of fair week.Open to all members with sewing or textile projects.Can be clothing, basket making, weavings, embroidery and needlework, etc.

Poster Contest – due to the office by Friday the week before fair.Can be turned in after evaluations.The theme is always general 4-H promotion.Size is 14x22” (½ a standard poster board).No Glitter. Winners announced on Tuesday.

Photography Contest - Open to all 4-H members.Theme is always the theme of the county fair.Photos must be 8x10” and mounted on black card stock or black matte.No frames.Winners chosen by popular vote of the public and announced on Saturday.

Healthy Living – 2018 challenge will be a table setting contest.Contact the office or visit our website at www.ccelewis.org for procedures and guidelines.Participants will present their table to a judge, choose a theme, write a menu, and wear a costume

STEM – Usually open to the public to promote interest in 4-H.Fun, easy activities for all age levels.Sign up in the youth building during fair week.2018 competition TBD.

Animal Science

Dairy Clipping Contest: Youth prepare their dairy show cattle and are judged on their clipping ability and presentation of their animal.

Dairy Showmanship & Breed Classes: 4-H & FFA youth show off their dairy cattle and what they have learned during their years in this project area. Showmanship highlights their skill in presenting their animal and themselves to the judge.

Horse Show: 4-H equestrians highlight their showmanship and riding abilities in a variety of both English & Western classes.

Livestock Show: This show includes swine, goat, sheep, beef, oxen & llama. Youth are judged on their showmanship skill of their animals and also animals are judged on their conformation.

Poultry, Rabbit & Cavy Show: These show's feature youth with their poultry, rabbits and guinea pigs.

Dog Show: 4-H youth and their canine partner compete in Grooming & Handling, Obedience, Rally Obedience and Agility.

Horse Judging Contest: Contestants will judge classes of light saddle horses, draft and/or ponies, plus selected performance classes. Questions and/or oral reasons will be given for one or more classes.

Dairy Judging Contest: The dairy judging contest requires competitors to understand the concepts of dairy cow conformation and provide sets of oral reasons for choosing one cow over another.

Tractor Driving Contest: This contest is for FFA and 4-H youth where they exhibit their handling skills.
