Established in 1985, New York Agriculture in the Classroom (NYAITC) is a partnership of Cornell University, the NYS Department of Ag & Markets, the NYS Education Department, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the New York Farm Bureau. Its mission is to foster awareness, understanding, and appreciation of how we produce food and fiber, what we eat, and how we live, by helping educators, students, and their communities learn about and engage with agriculture and food systems.
Lewis County’s Food for Thought
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Lewis County, in partnership with NYS Agriculture in the Classroom, presents a Blue Apron-inspired educational program for Pre-K – 5th grade classrooms within Lewis County school districts. Through this program, educators will order a free lesson plan and all necessary lesson materials required to incorporate various agricultural concepts into classroom curriculum. Explore a fresh menu of themed lesson plans each month connecting your students to local food and agriculture.
Who Can Participate?
Pre-K through 5th grade teachers in Lewis County. Multiple classrooms from the same school can participate.
Lessons offered through this program are selected through the Agricultural Literacy Curriculum Matrix, which contextualizes national education standards in science, social studies, and nutrition education with relevant instructional resources linked to Common Core Standards and next generation science standards.
Registration for the October program will open on September 3rd and close on September 25th. This program, which spans the duration of the school year, will have a changing menu of lesson plans and is guaranteed to be a fresh way to introduce agriculture into your curriculum.
