Farm to School

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Lewis County’s Farm to School program aims to support the partnerships between local schools, food producers, and families. It aligns with New York State’s Farm-to-School Program already implemented in 40% of the state’s school districts. This effort to promote awareness of our region’s rich agricultural opportunities will re-circulate dollars in the local economy, improve student health, and inspire an appreciation for the importance of agriculture.

To incentivize school districts to use more locally-produced products, the NYS 30% Initiative increases the reimbursement schools receive for any district that purchases at least 30 percent ingredients for their school lunch program from New York farms.

Local producers, food service staff, and teachers are encouraged to contact David Nisley with questions about local food procurement, the NYS 30% Initiative, and free educational resources on local agriculture.
