Agriculture Literacy Week

The Seasons of Learning

Agricultural Literacy Week, taking place March 16–20, 2026, is a vital opportunity to bridge the gap between the classroom and the fields that sustain us. By bringing volunteers into elementary schools—with a special focus on second-grade classrooms—the program introduces students to the essential rhythms of New York agriculture. It is a chance for farmers, 4-H members, and industry professionals to share their story, transforming the abstract concept of "food" into a tangible understanding of growth and labor through a 40-minute reading and hands-on activity.

While the classroom visits are the heart of the week, the journey doesn't have to end at the school doors. To get involved or learn more about the program’s mechanics, you can visit the New York Agriculture in the Classroom website. The site features this year’s selected book, Seasons on the Farm by Chelsea Tornetto (a copy of which can be easily placed on hold through the North Country Library System here), along with a suite of educator resources. Whether you want to volunteer to read, sponsor a book for a specific school, or download the "Seasons on the Farm Wheel" activity, all the necessary information is available at https://www.agclassroom.org/ny/programs/literacy/.

For even more farm-themed stories, the Lowville Free Library has also put together a fantastic "Let’s Talk About Farms!" reading list. This collection features local favorites like Hooray for Dairy Farming! and Century Farm: One Hundred Years on a Family Farm. These titles are available throughout the county system, making it easy for families to dive deeper into everything from big tractors to the daily lives of farm animals. You can browse the full collection here: Let’s Talk About Farms! Reading List.
